Life is much too short for settling. Lately in some conversations (particularly the domestic violence chat I participate in on Twitter), I shared an analogy that puts into perspective that concept. When we lower our standards for those who do not appreciate us, we are getting table scraps. Well, bottom line: YOU DESERVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE. When someone treats you like you don't matter, trust those actions as a gauge of who they are, not who you are. It is hard. It is hurtful. But, we are not meant to get someone's leftovers they don't want.
Personally, in my marriage, I settled all the time. It wasn't worth the inevitable one-sided argument that would come if I spoke up for what I wanted. But in this newly discovered "me chapter," I know it is worth those conversations because the right person doesn't want me to settle and won't want to settle himself.
The time that has been spent building healthy boundaries in life is priceless and sets me up for success in relationships. It is exciting though it is still difficult at times to cut people off for me. Recently, this need cropped up, but it was much easier for me to disengage emotionally than it would have been in the past. And that is encouraging! You are far from ordinary. Know your value and worth and don't let anyone treat you as less-you're more!
