There's this moment in the movie Aladdin where he asks Princess Jasmine to trust him. She is going to be leaping off a building, so it is kind of crucial that she decides quickly the answer to that question. Later on he asks again before their magic carpet ride. Trust is interesting to me. As a parent, one of my jobs is to be available to catch my child-sometimes physically and sometimes emotionally. And sometimes both. :) I might be across the room but I am trusted to be there to prevent injury to body or heart.
As we mature and give our hearts away piece by piece to friends, family members and partners, it can get more difficult to trust. We've been burned a time or two (or more...). I have never wanted to build up walls around my heart because it goes against my nature.
However, when someone shows you their true nature or that you can't trust their words or actions, we have to believe them. I can't risk life destruction again. We learn from our mistakes (hopefully), we notice the red flags, and we let in those who show us they say what they mean and mean what they say.
Being smart and protective of myself is not lacking forgiveness. Grace has a part, but there has to be a quality person on the receiving end. Crumpling up that piece of paper does some damage. I do the work to iron it back out so that I'm ready again to give it a go.
I would love to be caught myself. Caught up in love and life with someone who can be trusted with my heart and that of my kiddo. It is worth being patient for that level of love that I desire. Then when I am asked, "Do you trust me?" I can say, I do.
